“Volunteer for community development in Dong Ty village – Thac Ba” is a program of the project “Community Development and Ecosystem Conservation” held by Volunteer for Education Organization to promote community tourism in Dong Ty village, bring sustainable livelihoods for the poor and disadvantaged locals. Simultaneously, the program brings volunteers opportunities to experience life in pristine ecosystem of Thac Ba lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in northern Vietnam, known as Halong Bay in mountain and having 12 ethnic groups living around.

The program is aimed at promoting community tourism in Dong Ty village and maintaining traditional trades and culture imbued with Dao ethnic minority identity with the help of volunteers. Through pratical activities, V.E.O desire to help locals make best use of and protect precious natural resources.
Directly teaching local youngsters about forest protection, personal life and basic life skills
Teaching English for locals to communicate with foreign visitors in up coming time
Attending in survey activities, decorating and upgrading facilities for households participating in the program
Participating in craft activities and creating new products to sell in market
Creating and implementing communication plan to promote community tourism in Dong Ty
Experiencing life in nature and Dao ethnic culture
Guiding and advising locals to do community tourism
Trying activities such as mountain climbing, stream wading, caving and floating in lake, watching thousands deserted islands
Joining in the project and doing volunteer work to support minority ethnic people in Thac Ba lake, volunteers will provide some English, arts, music lesson, games for the children. A basic English lesson will be provided by volunteers to children in flexible time with 4 – 6 hours per day. Doing the campaign, help local people repair the house, support the work for community development will be required in the project. Another time you may wish to enjoy trekking in the forest and taste local culture. You will have time to experience with the way of life, learning from local people and then give them ideas that can improve their life skills, and bring them more opportunity for the better life in their ethnic minority families.
At the weekend and other free time, volunteer can trek around the valley to view the beauty of nature in the mountainous area. Or you can ask the local tour guide can take you join in the trekking forest trip, it will be very good chance for you to explore the real nature.
Volunteer will be arranged in the home-stay with a local family. A big room will be enough for 20 volunteers staying in. If any requirement for private room, you need inform us before one month from date of participation. Toilet, bathroom, and bed with soft blankets, sheets, pillows, and mattresses are available in home-stay.
MEAL: Host family also can provide 3 meals per day for you.
– Picking up volunteers from Noi Bai airport or Hanoi Center
– Moving to the project site and arranging the accommodation
– Doing orientation for all needed procedures for volunteers staying and involving in the project.
Training for volunteers about main tasks in project and trip planning, some policies in transportation and how to be safe in the trips. Then, volunteer will have time to visit and say hello with local people, visit the school and Center and staffs who volunteer will work with. The time for this will complete a day early and then you can have time to discover something surrounding you.
From Day 3, volunteers will be working full time with the support of Vietnamese staff members and will be involved in variety of tasks that following the schedule. Everything would be great if volunteer can do tasks initiatively, it is very helpful to make a friendly way to work with local people, give the best thing for them and volunteers also get the best feeling when join with them.
Have a small farewell party to say goodbye to all your new friends, taken your final photos and packed your bag full of souvenirs you’ll travel back to the airport, or off for further adventures elsewhere.
